Strategy Writeup

For this battle, you are basically fighting the snake-like creature and not Exposito. It is recommended that you have the following Rosary Beads equipped that can aid you in this battle. First is the Wicker Knot, it raises your defense against Toxic/Poison attacks and it can be purchased for tears-of-atonement-icon-blasphemous-wiki-guide 4000 from the merchant found at The Sleeping Canvases. Second is the Wicker Knot which raises your defense against physical attacks which can be acquired at the Patio of the Silent Steps.

The creature's weak spots are its head and the middle part of its body where you'll find it to be a rotten part of its body. Timing and patience are needed for this battle since the majority of its attacks will come from its projectile attacks and occasionally, its physical attacks. Whenever it uses its projectile attacks, watch out for its positioning and use the gaps in order to avoid getting hit, and once you're clear, close in the gap and follow-up with your basic swings and abilities.

Also, an important tip to take note of is to constantly move. From time to time, Exposito, the baby, will also telegraph its attack by trying to grab you and instantly kill you by tearing The Penitent One's body in half, so it's game over once you're caught in the circle that appears beneath The Penitent One's feet/position.

If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "REQUIEM AETERNAM" upon the screen and you'll be rewarded with tears-of-atonement-icon-blasphemous-wiki-guide 9000 as well as unlocking the Trophy/Achievement: Blind Innocence.

Exposito, Scion of Abjuration Lore

Exposito is said to be the child of a witch. After the inquisitors discovered that Exposito's mother was a witch, she was captured and brought to a campfire to be burned to death. The mother screamed and begged for her son not to see her death, so the inquisitors covered Exposito's eyes. Before the witch's execution, she asked someone to create a wicker figure that would resemble her image so that her son remembers her. Once it was finished and she was executed, Exposito was placed in the arms of the wicker which caused him to stop crying.

"When she was to be taken to the campfire, the inquisitors took the baby from her arms, and she screamed, begging for the child to not see her burn. The boy, who stared at her from afar, drenched in tears, was blindfolded: the blindfold was immediately moistened. The bonfire was surrounded by people, there to see the execution. They screamed, calling her a witch and heretic. When the flames started licking the pile of firewood, she asked a kind soul to build a wicker figure in her image and size, and to place the child in its arms so the baby would not miss her. And so they did, and when the figure was built, they placed the bawling child in its arms, and the orphan immediately stopped crying. The Miracle was merciful once again."

Exposito, Scion of Abjuration Notes & Trivia

  • Exposito is likely a reference to imagery of the infant Christ, as He is often depicted as an infant with a halo.
  • The halo of wood around Exposito's head references the crown of thorns Jesus supposedly wore during his crucifixion in the New Testament. (Mark 15:17)

I believe that the ''Wicker Knot'' lore gives the boss a backstory... ''When she was to be taken to the campfire, the inquisitors took the baby from her arms, and she screamed, begging for the child to not see her burn. The Miracle was merciful once again. ''
