Strategy Writeup

The fight begins with the face of Our Lady coming into view, followed by one of their hands. The pink spot (which is her brain) that is the exposed spot in the middle of Our Lady's forehead is her only attackable spot. This means that at the beginning, your only option is to use upward slash attacks. The weak point is not low enough to the ground for you to use the Down + Attack combo.

The first hand will telegraph a beam attack first by radiating a thin, purple beam in any direction, usually at a point near the player. After approximately two seconds, the beam will widen and will do damage if you come into contact with it. It tracks, but slowly enough for you to simply run away from it. You CANNOT dodge-slide through it.

Following the beam attack, the hand will emit yellow orbs in a circular pattern. While these move at a quicker pace than the prior beam attack, they are able to be slid under given the proper timing. Again, you cannot slide THROUGH them.

The most important attack to pay attention to is when the hand begins to shoot out orange-colored orbs. These can be attacked and will be reflected back toward the point of origin. However, there is a caveat to this, which turns out to be the key to beating the boss. As long as the boss's weak point is between you and the orbs that you are reflecting, they will fly toward the boss's weak point, damaging it considerably. However, if you are underneath the boss, or are between the boss and the hand, you will only reflect the orbs back toward the hand.

Reflecting the orbs requires a bit of rhythm. Simply mashing the attack button may reflect the first one, but it will leave you wide open to the others, causing you considerable damage and stunlocking you in the process. Methodical, evenly-timed swipes are the most efficient method for reflecting the orange orbs.

About mid-way through the fight, a second hand will appear, and it has the exact same attacks as the first hand, although each hand can vary its attacks. You will not, however, ever have two hands shooting the orange, reflectable orbs, so it's important to keep a close watch on your positioning once the second hand appears.

If you defeat the boss you will see the writing "REQUIEM AETERNAM" upon the screen and you'll be rewarded with tears-of-atonement-icon-blasphemous-wiki-guide 2600 as well as unlocking the the Trophy/Achievement: Face Off.

Attacks & Counters

Attack Counter
Phase 1
Orange Sphere Projectile It can be reflected with basic swings. Hurts the boss if hits the weakspot.
Beam Attack A thin, purple telegraph beam, followed by the attack proper (a wider beam) a few seconds later.
Flaming Projectile This cannot be reflected but instead, try to run away from where it is being telegraphed in order to widen the gap of the projectile's position. Allowing you to either slide underneath or jump over it.
Phase 2
Pinwheel Beam Similar to the beam attack, but it shoots 4 laser beams in a rotating pinwheel lick cross (+) pattern., can be avoided easily by keeping your distance while it telegraphs the beam.
A Second Hand This boss pulls out its second hand once it has about three to four bars of health left. It telegraphs the same attacks as it did in Phase 1.

Our Lady of the Charred Visage Lore

Once known as Áurea, she had a beautiful face who decided to pour boiling oil on her face as a response to those who continuously worshipped her and looked at her as a symbol of divinity. Her actions had her canonized as a saint and the covenant was built and founded.

"A young villager named Áurea had such a beautiful and pious face that even as a child, statue sculptors took her as a model for their creations. Her face became so recognisable that, little by little, people took her as the living, breathing image of divinity, until it reached a point where they ended up taking her out on procession, and even replacing their own images. Such was the fervour around her that she could not bear to be mistaken with the divinity, and burned her face with boiling oil to gift her pious beauty to God, and took up the habits of a convent."

"The years passed and she started showing natural signs of aging, just like her companions, except for the burn, which remained as fresh as the moment the boiling oil had spilled. The wound was still smoking, scorching and reeking. This was understood to be a miracle, and she was canonized in life by the Church; she became known as Our Lady of the Charred Visage. An order was founded in her name, where all the existing nuns, as well as those who wanted to take up the habit, had to burn their faces in the same way as Áurea had. She wears a golden mask under which she hides the gauze that alleviates the eternal pain that the burns still inflict on her."

Our Lady of the Charred Visage Notes & Trivia

Not sure if this was a glitch but I got stunlocked to death by two of the beam attacks either during or immediately after the requiem aeternam screen. I respawned in the boss arena instead of at the shrine and received no guilt penalty. The pathway preceding the boss was walled off until after the cutscene in the next room.
