Blasphemous is a 2D action-adventure game that is published by Team 17 Digital and developed by The Game Kitchen. Blasphemous is an action-platformer, hack-n-slash game that combines a variety of features such as a fast-paced, skilled combat mechanic and deep narrative lore that is delivered through exploring a huge dark fantasy world of non-linear levels.

Dive deep into the world where countless secrets, enemies, and NPCs wait. And discover a wide variety of gear such as prayers, relics, hearts, and rosary beads that can aid The Penitent One in surviving and reaching the goal.

 

Game Story Overview

Set in the savage land of Cvstodia, a place where religion is of the utmost importance in the eyes of the populace, superstition runs amok, and churches outnumber people two to one. You will find yourself in this hellish territory in the wake of the Age of Corruption.

A religion known as The Miracle is rampant in the land of Cvstodia and its manifestations have turned its devotees into nightmarish and twisted creatures.  Their land which was once bright and peaceful has been thrown into a darkness that is filled with devastating foes and secrets that are waiting to be discovered. 

Players will take control of The Penitent One, a rogue nomad and the sole survivor of the massacre of the "Silent Sorrow" who is on an adventure to free the world from the tragedy and darkness it is presently in. And hopefully... discover and reach the origin of your anguish.

Blasphemous Story

The story of Blasphemous begins with the nightmarish event that claimed the lives of the members of the Brotherhood of the Silent Sorrow, except for one. The Brotherhood is strongly opposed to the Last Son of The Miracle, Escribar, and has ordered their massacre. The Penitent One, and the last of his kind, awakens to find the now-lifeless bodies of his brothers. He finds his sword among the bodies and sets forth on a journey.

Blasphemous is a Metroidvania hardcore action game that takes place in a fictional land called Cvstodia. Players will take on the role of The Penitent One, a knight who has taken "the silent vow" and wields an ultimate sword known as Mea Culpa. The Penitent One goes on a journey to seek salvation or one that might lead him into damnation.

The game involves exploring the different landscapes in Cvstodia while platforming and fighting Enemies. You will face many twisted creatures that have been cursed by The Miracle and who have turned into bloodthirsty creatures. With his ultimate sword, the Penitent One will battle anyone that will attempt to block his way forward. The Penitent One will gain different Abilities and Stats that will aid him in his journey.

Each of the Enemies that he will be facing has a different attack pattern and challenges the players to dodge and, or parry their attacks. Timing is essential in surviving and players must do their best to avoid getting damaged as Health regeneration is very scarce, especially at the beginning. Many of these attacks, when parried at the right time, will leave the enemy to be vulnerable and will give The Penitent One a short window for a counter-attack that will deal fatal damage to enemies.

Venture into a Non-Linear World 

There are many ways to discover the next landscape in Blasphemous. The game allows for a non-linear exploration that will let players experience the game differently but always in the same hauntingly beautiful Cvstodia. There are many hidden paths to discover, multiple shortcuts to unlock, and secret chambers where trades will happen. Players are rewarded for exploring the game where they may find rewards such as items for upgrades and Merchants who have stayed in the forsaken land to aid people in need.

As a souls-like game, there are also checkpoints also known as Prie Dieu. By interacting with it, it will refill the flasks that The Penitent One is carrying, however, the monsters in that area will also respawn. These altars are vital for the progression of the game that will allow players to save their explored areas and travel to them when needed.

The game places an emphasis on the rich lore of Cvstodia. There will be plentiful encounters wherein The Penitent One will meet NPCs that can aid him, or recount their details of the history. All these experiences will make way for a truly immersive game as they discover the secrets that lie beneath Cvstodia.

Intense, Savage, and Brutal Combat

Receive the power of the ultimate sword, the Mea Culpa. The one and only weapon available to The Penitent One. He will journey to a hellish land called Cvstodia where he will defeat Enemies and Bosses to reach salvation. There are moves to be learned and skills to be acquired as you progress in the game. These skills can either be range or melee, or a powerful single-target or area-of-effect (AoE) attack.

As you play the game, The Penitent One will be able to perform executions which is a unique animation that will brutally take the life of your enemies, all in beautifully-crafted pixel graphics. The Penitent One's power will become stronger as you equip him with powerful items such as Relics, Rosary Beads, and other modifications to the Mea Culpa. Combat in Blasphemous is not limited to just hacking and slashing your way into enemy fights but also involves expertly maneuvering your environment. Make use of the platforms available to give you a better positioning.

Blasphemous will offer a challenge to those who are looking for it: Difficult platforming, relentless enemies, and resource management. The flask regeneration starts off very limited so it is essential to avoid getting damaged by your enemies, or otherwise, The Penitent One will die as he loses all of his health. There are also relentless enemies who will continue to follow you despite trying to run off, and lastly, platforming is one of the biggest challenges in the game that will require strategy, quick reflexes, and oftentimes, intuition. 

 

 

Build Your own Playstyle

Play your own style in Blasphemous 2 and equip Relics, Rosary Beads, Prayers, and Sword Hearts to give you the playstyle best suited for you. These abilities and stats that you will learn will offer you better chances of surviving on the battlefield. Players are given the freedom to experiment with different combinations that will suit their current enemy, and or the environment.

Fight Formidable Bosses

Bosses in Blasphemous are usually indicated by their gigantic size and a Health bar that seemed to go on forever. They are characterized by their unique names, powerful attacks, and unique attack patterns. Fighting these bosses usually come at a time when you are nearly complete in an area, and you must defeat them in order to progress the story or move on to the next landscape.

Fight powerful bosses in Blasphemous 2 and defeat the giant creatures attempting to stand between you and your goal. To overcome these bosses, it is essential to learn their moves as you fight them. Dodge, parry, and dash around bosses to ensure your win in battle. Survive their powerful attacks and you will be able to unlock new areas to explore. These bosses also have their own ties to the secrets and mysteries of Cvstodia. When you defeat them, they usually share a piece of their story.
